In this passage, Elijah had to confront King Ahab after Obadiah sent his message to the latter. The famous story of how Elijah defeated the 950 prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel followed.
Life is full of colours, highlighted by the ups and downs of the mountains and valleys experiences. We face challenges everyday, don't we? Some days more while some days less.
So here in this spectacular display of God's miracle power of fire overcoming the water, we ask ourselves the ABC challenges we must overcome:-
1. Who is the Ahab we need to present ourselves today?
2. Who are the Baals in our lives today?
3. Which Carmel mountain are we now going to overcome?
King Ahab was a wicked king who married Jezebel in the 9th century. After the Israelites came out of Egypt and settled down, they totally forgotten about the true worship of Yahweh who performed the great miracles. They started to be involved in the pagan worship of Baal - thought to be their god of the sun , rain, crops and fertility.
On Mount Carmel, there was a face off by Elijah and the prophets of Baal.
"Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. For our God is a consuming fire." Hebrews 12:28-29
Remember whom we serve - the fire of God came down and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil and also licked up the water the in trench! What a spectacular display of His awesome power! Usually it is water that is used to put out the fire. But here we see a total reversal - the fire licked up the water! Beyond man's imagination, isn't it?
May we be reminded to revere the Lord at all cost. We do have this kingdom which cannot be shaken if we choose to be like Elijah - standing firmly on what he believed. Whose side are you leaning on? The Ahabs, the Baals or Elijah ? It better be on the Lord's side.
If ever we do face a mountainous challenge ahead of us, remember it was on Mount Carmel that we can call upon the LORD for help.
Ps 121 " I will lift up my eyes to the hills - where does my help comes from? My help comes from the LORD - the maker of heaven and earth"
